We Stand in Solidarity

Peaceful Protest for George Floyd

We Stand in Solidarity with the Family of George Floyd - Justice is Required

Dear Students,

Sorry for the delay in sending this to you. It has taken me awhile to formulate my thoughts. As an African American male who has experienced discrimination and racism, I am angry, sadden, disappointed and extremely concerned by the events of the day. I have been at a loss for words but make no mistake my silence has not meant a lack of commitment or action.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen our communities experience some of the most challenging moments in recent history. We are saddened and disappointed by the events of the past few weeks and the symbolism that they represent. We acknowledge that there is racism, discrimination, inequality, and inequity in our society and that it impacts our students, faculty and staff of color and their communities.  This is inexcusable and unacceptable.

As the Executive Director of the UIC Urban Health Program, I want to assure you that I am here for you and support each and everyone one of you. I know from first-hand experience, discussions and surveys that at times we fall short of our goals. Similar, to the rest of society, we have work to do at UIC. What we don’t need now are platitudes; we need are tangible steps to assure that the climate in our community is supportive of everyone.  The sense of security and belonging begins with all members of our community reflecting on our contributions and any necessary changes. I am working with the other administrators, faculty, staff, and students to monitor the University’s climate to help improve our community.  I commit to doing whatever is necessary to continue to move us forward and make real lasting change.

I am here for you! Your voice matters!   Please do not hesitate to contact me at dpendle@uic.edu or 312-355-1670 if you have any questions or require any assistance.

In solidarity,

Dr. Darryl Pendleton
