Summer Enrichment Program
With an increasingly multicultural population, diversity and cultural competency issues in U.S. health care have become even more critical.  The Institute’s Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is helping by building a pool of diverse future leaders.

The SEP gives graduate students in health administration real-world work experience.  Interns are matched with appropriate health care facilities for a 10-12 week summer internship.  A volunteer executive from the host organization provides mentoring, support and career advice during the internship.  The Institute supports the interns, and program alumni, with leadership development education and ongoing networking and mentoring opportunities.  The Institute also provides assistance with determining the best match between interns and host sites, as well as orientation sessions for hosts and interns and detailed program materials.

Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program
The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded, nine-week summer program providing educational and professional development opportunities for fellows interested in infectious diseases research and health disparities. Fellows from underrepresented populations, as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, are strongly encouraged to apply.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
The program begins May 29, 2018 with an orientation at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD that focuses on research design, infectious diseases, urban health issues, and other health equity topics. (Fellows assigned to CDC will have an orientation in Atlanta on Thursday and Friday of the first week.) During the remaining 8 weeks of the program, fellows receive mentored research and professional development experiences at the CDC in Atlanta, GA or in Baltimore at Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Bloomberg School of Public Health, or the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). The Ferguson Fellowship is contingent on federal funding.

The CDC Site in Atlanta offers a research externship focused on infectious diseases and addressing public health challenges. Fellows work with research mentors on a range of infectious disease projects and public health prevention, treatment and epidemiological studies. Research experiences include laboratory science, epidemiology, public health policy, public health education and emergency preparedness. Conferences and networking related to public health infectious diseases research and response preparedness are offered.

Students who are members of under-represented populations (as defined by the federal government) are strongly encouraged to apply! A $4000 stipend is provided to all program participants along with student housing and round-trip travel for out-of-state applicants. In order to be considered for acceptance into this program, the applicant must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, or public health graduate program along with having at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. EXPECTATIONS & OBJECTIVES
Fellows accepted into this fellowship are expected to:

• Attend weekly public health summer seminars
• Develop and present their research or infectious diseases public health topic at the Fellowship Program Symposia at the end of the summer session
